Oshtemo Charter Township, a growing community west of the City of Kalamazoo, had a vision for its future—to ensure all residents have adequate access to cellular service coverage and home internet.

Like many communities, access to reliable internet and cellular service became vital after the onset of the COVID-19 Global Pandemic. The need for stable internet to conduct at-home work and schooling became even more prevalent.

Along with the Planning Commission, Township elected, appointed and staff leaders, and industry experts, McKenna led a public-driven process to determine the existing service levels of home internet and cellular service. This public outreach allowed for a revamp of the existing wireless communications facilities ordinance to better meet industry standards and resident needs.

At the end of the process, the Township was able to determine what regions of the Township need further investment by service providers and how best to protect current residents from the installation of new infrastructure to support enhancing access to cellular service and broadband internet.
